He (God) is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day… (Timothy) Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.
2 Timothy 1:14
We abandon ourselves to God. We fall in love with Him and our disciplined joy in this is to give our heart to Him. He is now the keeper of our soul. It is His job to watch over it, protect it and grow it up. That is His ‘work’ and not ours once we have given our heart to Him.
We do this because God has given Himself to us. It is a treasure, placed like a seed in us. Our work is to guard it. To protect it as you would protect your blood. If you start bleeding, if it starts ‘leaking’ out of you, you don’t hesitate, you find a way to stop it. Our physical life is in the blood and we guard it carefully. In the same way, our spiritual life is in working with the Holy Spirit to guard the treasure of our revelation of the Father in Jesus.
This is not Sunday going to church work, that (day) is celebration time as we join together to express who He is in the community of faith. The work of guarding the treasure in us is learning to grow the revelation we have of His greatness and goodness. We feed it with faith in a moment-by-moment abiding discipline of love that starts on Monday and continues to Saturday.
As soon as we sense this treasure is ‘leaking’ out of us through distractions or seductions we take action for we know it is our life and must be guarded. Our wounds are healed, we hold the treasure in us and continue on.
